Job Training for English Language Learners

These courses are perfect for students whose English skills are high intermediate or more advanced, but still need improvement. Qualified students can improve their English language skills while learning a job skill.  This program is designed to help prepare you to pass an industry-specific, nationally recognized certification. Many courses finish with job fairs and connections to employers looking to hire graduates.

Registration & Orientation Sessions

To determine if you qualify, you must attend a registration / orientation session

At registration/orientation sessions, you will learn more about what to expect from the specific course. Potential students take an English test, if needed, and participate in a short interview. The test and interview will tell us your level of English and what classes will best help you in your career. Potential students are then contacted within two weeks to inform them whether or not they are in the class. Students are required to attend an assignment session to receive their class assignment.

Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) Training for ESOL Students

Are you ready to begin a career as a medical assistant and improve your English?  In this program you will improve your English, math, reading, study, computer, and work-related skills. Learn the skills needed to work as a medical assistant in offices of physicians, hospitals, outpatients care centers, and other healthcare facilities. You will learn how to assist physicians by performing functions such as preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac cycle.   This course will prepare you to take the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) Exam. 

Program Requirements: 

  • Be interested in getting a job as a medical assistant.
  • Want or need to improve your English skills.
  • Attend the Online information session and take all required tests.
  • Be a Maryland resident.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Be eligible to work in the USA
  • Note: Students with F1 or J1 visa cannot take classes in this program.

After the information session, you will need to take an in-person test at the East County Education Center.

Phlebotomy students
Phlebotomy Technician Training for ESOL Students

Are you ready to begin a career as a phlebotomy technician and improve your English?  In this program you will improve your English, math, reading, study, computer, and work-related skills. Learn the skills needed to work as a phlebotomy technician in hospitals, clinics, doctors’ offices, and other healthcare facilities.

Program requirements: 

  • Be interested in getting a job as a phlebotomy technician.
  • Want or need to improve your English skills.
  • Attend the Online information session and take all required tests. 
  • Be a Maryland resident.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Be eligible to work in the USA.
  • Attend required online information session.

After the Information session, you will need to take an in-person test at the Takoma Park / Silver Spring campus.

IT Network Training Student
IT Network Training for ESOL Students

Are you ready to begin an IT Network career and improve your English?  In this program you will improve your English, math, reading, study, computer, and work-related skills. You will prepare to take the Network+ Certification exam and learn the skills needed to work in the IT network industry, in careers such as help desk technician, network support technician, datacenter support technician and cable technician.

Program Requirements: 

  • Be interested in getting a job in IT Network support.
  • Want or need to improve your English skills.
  • Have some basic computer skills.
  • Attend the Online Information Session  and take all required tests. 
    • Dates and times will be posted when available
  • Be a Maryland resident.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Be eligible to work in the USA.

Certificate for Apartment Maintenance Technician (CAMT)

Enhance your professional growth in the apartment industry by preparing to  earn a Certificate for Apartment Maintenance Technician (CAMT). You will improve your English, math, reading, study, computer, and work-related skills while learning how to maintain and repair: apartment interior and exterior, electrical systems, plumbing, HVAC, and appliances.

Program Requirements: 

  • Be interested in working in the apartment industry.
  • Want or need to improve your English skills.
  • Attend mandatory Online Registration/Orientationnew window session

Pharmacy technician training
Pharmacy Technician Training for ESOL Students

Are you ready to begin a career as a pharmacy technician and improve your English? In this program you will improve your English, math, reading, study, computer, and work-related skills. Learn the skills needed to work as a pharmacy technician in hospitals, pharmacies, and other healthcare facilities. You will prepare to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exam.

Program Requirements:

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA)

Improve your English, math, reading, study computer, and work-related skills. Learn how to take care of patients and residents in a clinical setting and how to take blood pressure, feed and bathe patients, use CPR if a person is having a heart attack or not breathing, help patients move safely, work with medical records and medical technology, and work as part of a healthcare team of professionals.

Program Requirements:

Early Childhood Education classroom
Early Childhood Education Training for ESOL Students

Are you a Maryland resident with a high school diploma, eager to enhance your English skills and begin a rewarding career in child care? Our specialized EARN (grant-funded) Early Childhood Education program is designed for Maryland residents with high school diplomas, aiming to enhance both English proficiency and child care expertise.  Students will participate in a comprehensive curriculum comprised of early childhood education courses, ESOL courses, and career readiness workshops, all designed to equip you with the skills and certification essentials for success in diverse child care settings, spanning infancy to age eight.  

Completion of our program will help you:

  • Fulfill the class hours required by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) to work in a Maryland child care setting
  • Meet the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential requirement of 120 class hours in a child care setting
  • Create your professional portfolio, required for the CDA Credential

Program Eligibility Requirements:

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be a Maryland resident
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Meet English proficiency requirements
  • Attend required in-person information and assessment session

  • Submission of the Application Form within 24 hours of the information and assessment session.

Program applications are accepted once a year.
